    What is a mammogram?

A set of images obtained from a machine that uses low-dose X-rays to detect breast cancer and evaluate changes in the breast

Mammograms are performed as a screening test for asymptomatic women, or as a diagnostic test to evaluate abnormal clinical or imaging findings. They are performed in Ontario by Medical Radiation Technologists and interpreted by radiologists in hospitals and independent health facilities.

Our program applies to all screening and diagnostic mammography performed in Ontario, all providers of mammography services (radiologists and Medical Radiation Technologists) and all facilities where the service is performed (hospitals and independent health facilities).

A list of the four quality management program components can be found on the About Us page.

    Key Activities in 2016/17

    • April to October 2016: Confirm facility leads
    • November 2016: Release provincial, regional and facility reports; facility leads receive and review facility reports

    Stakeholder Engagement

Our success depends on feedback from key stakeholder groups including patients, service users, providers, facility leadership, professional organizations and health system leaders. Through presentations, meetings, webinars, webcasts, teleconferences, in-person and online consultations, newsletters and letters, we engage with these groups to obtain their input on our implementation plans and activities.

The Mammography Provincial Quality Committee also provides feedback and direction on the Partnership’s implementation activities. Members include:

    • Dr. Rola Shaheen, Provincial Lead
    • Mammography regional leads
    • IHF and hospital leadership
    • Patients and service users
    • Allied healthcare professionals such as Medical Radiation Technologists (MRTs)

More information about the our program and the Quality Management Partnership as a whole can be found on the Resources page.
