Colonoscopy

    What is a colonoscopy?

A visual inspection of the rectum and colon performed using a colonoscope, a long, flexible lighted tube with a camera at the end.

Colonoscopies may be performed for a variety of reasons, including:

    • colorectal cancer screening
    • follow-up of abnormal screening tests
    • symptoms such as abdominal pain or rectal bleeding
    • surveillance of individuals with chronic conditions, such as inflammatory bowel disease, previous polyps, or prior history of colorectal cancer

They are performed by general surgeons and gastroenterologists in hospitals and in out-of-hospital premises. During a colonoscopy, polyps that may develop into colorectal cancer or that have become cancerous can be removed/biopsied and other abnormalities may be treated.

    Scope

Our program applies to all providers of colonoscopy services, including gastroenterologists, general surgeons and endoscopy nurses. It also applies to all facilities where the colonoscopy services are provided (hospitals and out-of-hospital premises), but excludes paediatric colonoscopy.

A list of the four quality management program components can be found on the About Us page.

    Stakeholder Engagement

Our success depends on feedback from key stakeholder groups interested in quality colonoscopy. These groups include patients and service users, providers, facility leadership, professional organizations and health system leaders. Through presentations, meetings, webinars, webcasts, teleconferences, in-person and online consultations, newsletters and letters, we engage with these groups to obtain their input on our implementation plans and activities.

The Colonoscopy Provincial Quality Committee also provides feedback and direction on the Partnership’s implementation activities. Members include:

    • Dr. David Morgan, Provincial Lead
    • Colonoscopy regional leads
    • Out-of-hospital premises and hospital leadership
    • Patients and service users
    • Allied healthcare professionals

More information about our program and the Quality Management Partnership as a whole can be found on the Resources page.
